A spicy margarita is a bright, refreshing cocktail with a gentle kick. Fresh lime juice keeps it sharp, agave rounds the edges, and jalapeño adds heat without taking over.
The key is control. Muddle, which means gently press, just a few jalapeño slices in the shaker. Taste one slice first if you can, because peppers vary a lot in heat.
This recipe makes two drinks, which is handy for sharing. You can also mix the lime, agave, orange liqueur, and jalapeño ahead, then shake with tequila and ice when it is time to serve.
01What you'll need
Ingredients
9 items · 2 cocktails
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt or Tajín, for the rims, with about 1/8 teaspoon consumed per drink
- 1 lime wedge, for rimming the glasses
- 4 thin jalapeño slices, plus more for garnish if you like
- 1 1/2 ounces fresh lime juice
- 1 ounce agave nectar
- 3 ounces blanco tequila
- 1 ounce orange liqueur, such as Cointreau or triple sec
- Ice, for shaking and serving
- 2 small lime wheels, for garnish
02How to make it
Step-by-step
Rim the glasses
Run the lime wedge around the rim of two rocks glasses. Dip the rims into a small plate of kosher salt or Tajín. Fill the glasses with fresh ice and set them aside.
Muddle the jalapeño
Add the jalapeño slices and fresh lime juice to a cocktail shaker. Gently press the jalapeño with a muddler or the handle of a wooden spoon 3 to 5 times. Do not crush the seeds too hard, or the drink can turn grassy and very hot.
Add the sweetener
Pour in the agave nectar. Swirl the shaker for a few seconds to help the agave loosen and mix with the lime juice.
Pour in the spirits
Add the blanco tequila and orange liqueur to the shaker. Blanco tequila tastes clean and crisp here, while the orange liqueur adds a lightly sweet citrus note.
Shake until cold
Fill the shaker about two-thirds full with ice. Seal it tightly and shake for 12 to 15 seconds, until the outside of the shaker feels very cold.
Strain into glasses
Strain the margarita evenly into the prepared glasses over the ice. Use a fine-mesh strainer too if you want to catch tiny jalapeño seeds or pulp.
Garnish and serve
Add a lime wheel and an extra jalapeño slice to each glass, if desired. Serve right away while the drink is cold and lively.

Cook's tips
- For a milder drink, remove the jalapeño seeds before muddling or use only 1 slice per cocktail.
- For more heat, muddle 1 or 2 extra jalapeño slices, or let sliced jalapeño sit in the tequila for 10 minutes before shaking. Strain well before using.
- Make-ahead option: Mix the lime juice, agave, orange liqueur, and jalapeño up to 4 hours ahead and refrigerate. Strain out the jalapeño if you do not want the heat to keep building. Add tequila and shake with ice just before serving.
- Storage note: A shaken margarita is best served right away. Leftover mixed margarita without ice can be refrigerated for up to 1 day, but the lime flavor will soften.
- Swap the sweetener: Simple syrup works in place of agave. Use the same amount, then taste and adjust because some syrups are less sweet than agave.
- No cocktail shaker? Use a clean jar with a tight lid. Shake carefully, then strain through the jar lid or a small strainer.
Cook's note
Nutrition is estimated per cocktail and assumes about 1/8 teaspoon of salt is consumed from the rim. Sodium will be lower if you skip the rim or use less salt.
04Frequently asked
Questions & answers
Can I make a pitcher of spicy margaritas?
Yes. Multiply the ingredients by the number of servings you need and stir the mixture without ice in a pitcher. Keep it chilled, then shake individual portions with ice or pour over ice just before serving. Add jalapeño slowly so the heat does not get too strong.
What tequila is best for a spicy margarita?
Use a blanco tequila that you enjoy drinking. It has a clean, fresh flavor that works well with lime and jalapeño. Reposado tequila also works, but it adds warmer oak and vanilla notes.
How do I keep the margarita from getting too spicy?
Start with fewer jalapeño slices and muddle gently. You can also remove the seeds and white ribs inside the pepper, where much of the heat sits. Taste after shaking, then add more heat next time if needed.
Can I use bottled lime juice?
Fresh lime juice is strongly recommended because it tastes brighter and less flat. Bottled lime juice will work in a pinch, but the cocktail may taste sharper or slightly bitter.
What can I use instead of orange liqueur?
You can use a splash of fresh orange juice plus a little extra agave, but the drink will be lighter and less boozy. For the classic margarita balance, orange liqueur is the better choice.
