I make all the seasonings for bagels myself so I can control the ingredients and the size of salt and other seasonings, we prioritize health, so it is important to be able to control the ingredients in bagel chips yourself. However, you can also use ingredients available at the store.
Olive Oil:
The use of olive oil is not only for aroma but is also important as a binder between the seasoning and the bagel. The seasonings will adhere well to the bagel so it will taste crispy and tastier.
Plain Bagels:
To make homemade bagel chips, you can use a variety of bagels, but it’s better to use plain bagels.
Substitute Bagel Chips Ingredient
- Bagels: If you don’t have bagels then just use a different type of bread, for example sourdough, this will work great for homemade bagel-type chips.
- Everything Bagel Seasoning: If you don’t have special bagel seasoning, you can use Italian seasoning or a mixture of onions and salt.
- Olive Oil: If you don’t have olive oil, then choose a neutral oil so that it doesn’t dominate in terms of taste and aroma. You can use a light oil like canola, or avocado oil.
RECIPE VARIATIONS
There are many variations of the recipe for homemade bagel chips. Please try one of the several variations available.
- Cheese: You can try adding grated cheese, use Parmesan or Cheddar cheese on the bagel before baking.
- Cinnamon Sugar: Make a mixture of cinnamon and sugar, then
stir the bagel slices in there. - Garlic Herb: Add garlic herb to your bagel recipe, and mix minced garlic with Italian seasoning. Mix minced garlic and dried Italian herbs with olive oil before tossing with the bagel slices.

- Sweet Onion: For a sweet onion taste, sprinkle savory onions onto bagel slices that have been drizzled with olive oil.
- Truffles: You can also sprinkle truffle oil on a baking sheet before baking.
How To Make Homemade Bagel Chips
Step 1:
Preheat the oven, line a baking sheet with parchment paper, and thinly slice each bagel into rounds and at a slight angle, making the thickness about ⅛ to ¼-inch.
Step 2:
Place the bagel slices in a mixing bowl, and drizzle olive oil over the bagel slices. Mix using your hands until all the bagels are coated with olive oil.
Step 3:
Add the seasoning of your choice, you can use homemade bagel chip seasoning or store-bought. Stir again with your hands until everything is coated with the spices.
Step 4:
Now you can spread the bagel slices on a baking sheet that has been lined with parchment paper. Bake for 15 minutes, then turn over to the other side for 10-15 minutes, cool, and store.
Pro-Tips for Best Bagel Chips:
Bagel slices should be sliced with a sharp serrated knife, this will make thin slices and cook uniformly quickly.
Since bagels are round, cut them at an angle, this will give them a longer and prettier shape.
When you bake in the oven, watch carefully, and control so that it doesn’t burn because bagel chips can cook quickly. If you don’t watch it properly, you are worried it will burn.
