Why I made this rosemary hair oil recipe
Recently, many people have experienced the problem of hair loss, so many are looking for solutions to grow it back or prevent further hair loss, so if you are one of them, we are ready to help.
I also have hair loss due to stress and am working on growing my hair back. We also work to get back thick and strong hair. To achieve this goal we have tried using homemade rosemary water and rosemary oil.
Of course, we have to keep applying it, but it won’t take long to see results even though it’s still early days, but at least the hair that used to fall out is now starting to improve.
Rosemary oil for hair
Rosemary oil refers to any carrier oil that is infused with rosemary leaves. This is different from rosemary essential oil. Aromatic oil containing rosemary contains many benefits for hair and at the same time for scalp health. So, it is very good for thickening your hair.
The process of making rosemary oil for hair involves gentle heating of the rosemary leaves and carrier oils and antioxidants. Then the mixture is left to infuse for several weeks. This method produces a strong, bright, and fragrant golden oil that is infused with the antioxidant rosemary and several other compounds.
Its a gorgeous golden color, it is like liquid gold that dries down the hair. The longer this liquid is infused, the stronger the color will be until it darkens, sometimes it also turns into a golden green hue. This homemade rosemary oil can be applied directly to the scalp to help hair growth, thicken hair and stop hair loss or you can add this infused rosemary oil to other hair growth oils that you like, such as DIY lash serum, homemade hair growth oil, and brow growth serum.
Rosemary Infused Oil Vs Rosemary Essential Oil
Are infused oils and essential oils both good for hair, which romseary oil is best for growing hair?
Rosemary essential oil contains many aromatic compounds, and infused rosemary contains a broad spectrum of fat-soluble antioxidants, fatty acids and polyphenols that are not found in purified rosemary oil – all of which are good for your hair and help your hair grow.
In terms of benefits, infused rosemary seems to provide the greatest benefits for hair growth. This doesn’t mean rosemary essential oil is ineffective. If you don’t have rosemary water or infused rosemary, you can still use the essential oil in a carrier oil. This will also stimulate hair to grow more. Alternatively, you can also use C02 rosemary extract.
Another thing you need to know is that rosemary infused oil smells more like food (think delicious focaccia dipping oil), while rosemary essential oil smells more like medicine.
Even though it smells like food, we do not recommend that you use rosemary oil in your culinary world.
Rosemary Oil Benefits for Hair
Using rosemary on the scalp has been shown to stimulate hair growth, stop hair loss, and increase hair volume or thickness.

- Castor oil and other carrier oils as a diluent, you can use MCT oil or coconut oil.
- Vitamin E oil, this is useful for protecting the oil during the infusion process.
Note: If you don’t have rosemary oil, you can find 2 other alternatives such as hair oil with essential oils or rosemary extract below.
Organic rosemary
To make rosemary oil you will need a lot of dried rosemary leaves. The price is affordable and you can buy it in large quantities, dried rosemary will last a long time, so you don’t have to worry about spoilage. You can make many things with dried rosemary including rosemary oil, rosemary water or other hair growth DIYs.
How much rosemary is needed to make rosemary oil? The answer is “a lot”, we usually use 3/4 cup of dried organic rosemary leaves to one cup of carrier oil, to get a powerful, high concentration hair growth oil.
Why do we use dried rosemary? This is important to prevent mold so that the oil you make is free from mold. Why use organic rosemary? It is also important that we obtain rosemary oil that is free from pesticide residues.
Carrier oils
Another ingredient you should use is a carrier oil. In this rosemary oil recipe we use castor oil and fractionated coconut oil (or MCT oil). For infused oils, it is important that you choose the right carrier oil.
Among the hair care oils that are popularly used are sunflower oil, almond oil which contains PUFA, argan oil, this type of oil is unstable and easily damaged when used as a hot infusion. So, you have to look for a suitable and appropriate carrier oil.
Castor oil
Castor oil has its own benefits for health, besides that it is also low in PUFA content. Among the benefits of castor oil for growth are prostaglandin-like effects which directly modulate growth.
Castor oil also contains a lot of vitamin E which is also good at stimulating hair growth. It also contains ricinoleic acid, a unique fatty acid that can optimally nourish the hair shaft.

Some people think this oil cannot be used because of its viscosity, but you can dilute it with other stable oils such as using fractionated coconut oil or using MCT oil, this will overcome its viscosity and make it easier to use.
Fractionated coconut oil or MCT oil
Among other carrier oils that can be used are liquid coconut oil and MCT oil and are safe for hot infusions. It consists mostly of saturated fat, so it is very stable to heat and has a long shelf life.
But there are some types of hair that are not compatible with this oil such as sensitive hair with protein. For certain people, coconut oil is applied to the hair can make hair tangled and this creates new problems.
So, for conditions like this, monounsaturated oil can be an alternative. The monounsaturated oils that are meant are like jojoba oil, avocado oil, marula oil, and olive oil. They are best in this case to dilute castor oil.
Vitamin E
If you want to make herbal infused oils, vitamin E is essential and it’s like a must-have secret weapon.
The benefits of adding vitamin E to rosemary oil infusion include the fact that it contains strong antioxidants which make it able to stabilize fat. This will act as insurance in protecting the fatty acids while the infusion is running.
In addition, the benefits of vitamins separately are also great for growing hair. If you rub vitamin E on your hair, it will help it grow. It stimulates blood flow to the scalp, and its powerful antioxidant content helps in revitalizing and repairing your hair follicles.
How to Make Rosemary Oil for Hair
- Place the dried rosemary leaves in a stainless steel pan, pour in castor oil and fractionated coconut oil or you can also use another carrier oil such as jojoba, pour over the rosemary to cover it.
- Add vitamin E oil to the mixture and make sure the herbs are completely submerged in the poured oil. Now, put the pan on the stove, turn on medium heat, keep your laser thermometer handy, so the point here is to extract as much rosemary oil as possible without damaging it with high heat levels (so we should not heat it with high heat).
- Keep rosemary oil from heating above 110 C.
- When it is hot, turn off the stove and stir in the oil, and cover the pan to retain the heat. This is important to infuse the oil at low temperatures. Now you can leave it and look at it again after an hour or after it has cooled.
Note: If you have a thermometer, use it to measure temperature and don’t exceed medium-low temperature.
Do this warming infusion every hour, once it cools, put it back on medium heat, turn off the heat, stir and put the lid back on the pan so that it soaks again.
When it is cold, then transfer it to a closed glass jar or glass container. Close tightly and place in a dark cupboard for at least 2 weeks. The longer you infuse, the more effective it will be. During the infusion period the color will change from bright yellow, golden to even green to golden.
If it’s been two weeks then it’s time to filter it, use a fine strainer or cheesecloth. Strain the rosemary leaves well and the aim is that you get only the rosemary oil. If you have, now transfer this oil into a bottle and you are ready to use it anytime to thicken hair, enlarge follicles and prevent hair loss.

How to Use Rosemary Extract for Hair

Rosemary extract is high in carnosic acid. It is a powerful antioxidant which helps in promoting hair growth as well as inhibiting DHT and suppressing hair growth.
Rosemary extract is very concentrated, if used excessively it can irritate the skin, the maximum usage rate is 0.5%. Choose an oil-based extract instead of the water-soluble rosemary leaf extract.
